Janes is recruiting a Features Editor for the Janes Defence Weekly (JDW) magazine team on a 12 month fixed term contract. 

Reporting into the JDW Editor, the Features Editor is responsible for producing all of the 'back matter' within the magazine, including features, interview pages, analysis pages, opinion editorials. This is a key role within a varied and fast paced environment ensuring deadlines are achieved on a weekly basis.


The Features Editor will be part of a highly skilled editorial team and the role will involve:

  • Commissioning and editing all features which includes:
    • Interview pages 
    • Analysis pages
    • Opinion editorials and other back matter for JDW
    • Including picture research and sourcing for these features
  • Acting as overall editor-in-chief for the end-of-year review feature 
  • Ensuring all previously mentioned material is produced according to the high editorial standards of JDW and passed for press according to the established schedule.


  • A proven track record in editing journalistic copy.
  • Excellent knowledge of written journalistic English with a high attention to detail.
  • A proven track record in liaising with contributors and freelancers is highly desirable.
  • The position would suit an existing journalist with a strong interest (or track record in) the defence sector
  • Proven exposure to the world of defence and security is highly desirable. 
  •  A degree or a post-graduate qualification in a related domain (such as war studies or international relations) is preferred. 
  • A journalism degree (such as an NCTJ) would be desirable.
