With a legacy of more than 100 years, Janes provides the only single resource for comprehensive, unclassified and up-to-date intelligence on military equipment in production and use around the globe. By structuring and connecting this data to the inventories for more than 190 countries, Janes is uniquely positioned to provide our customers with timely, accurate, validated intelligence to support entity recognition, capability assessment and market analysis.

Janes is a leading provider of timely and assured data, information, analysis and forecasts for Defence & National Security organisations globally.

JOB OVERVIEW

For this role, you will be part of the Central Analysis Team, recently set up to focus on developing defence equipment content across the whole range of Janes' products and deliverables. The core part of this role is to use open source information, such as press releases, news stories and company product brochures, to update equipment profiles and military procurement programmes data in a timely fashion.

This entry-level position is central to all content workflows and enables the broad development of skills in research, writing and analysis. The ability to quickly assess, analyse and process information is key, as is the ability to work across multiple subject areas in quick succession. A questioning approach to source material is critical, along with the ability to identify disparate facts from multiple sources and suggest possible resolutions.

In addition to the core functions of the role there is also a requirement to support consultancy and other research projects on an ad hoc basis. In these instances, the successful candidate will be seconded to the relevant subject team and work within that area for the duration of the research/analysis.

Due to the role working with a diverse set of colleagues and external contributors, as well as a requirement to be in direct contact with customers, excellent written and verbal communication is a must.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent written English with the ability to quickly read and summarise the relevant facts from a variety of documents
  • Comfortable with data-oriented analysis and the ability to draw sound conclusions from data
  • An interest or background in military equipment, either from a technology or application perspective, is highly desirable
  • Experience of working in a collaborative matrix environment with positive effect is highly desired
  • Demonstrable mental agility, with the ability to swiftly change focus and the concepts being worked on at any one time, and the ability to effectively multitask
  • An interest and/or an understanding of at least one relevant military technology area (military vehicles, weapons, systems)
  • The ability to quickly assess and extract key information from a variety of sources and transform them into insight
  • A thorough working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint applications as well as an ability to conduct online research
  • Ability to quickly adapt and work with new information technology applications
  • Very strong written and oral communication skills
  • Self-discipline to meet deadlines while meeting established qualitative and quantitative goals
